14th-20th October

Pelota World Championships Barcelona 2018

The world’s main Basque pelota event comes to the pelota courts of the Vall d’Hebrón. Soak up the tradition of this centuries-old sport and cheer along more than 300 players from the four corners of the world.

This October, Barcelona will be the world’s focus for Basque pelota when it hosts the 18th World Championships. Over a six-day period, the Olympic pelota courts in the Vall d’Hebron, which have been refurbished and adapted for these championships, will be the venue for this event.

The World Championships will feature the main disciplines of the sport (cesta punta, pala/paleta, mano and frontennis) which are played on four different types and sizes of court (30, 36, 56 metres and a closed court, or trinquete).

The World Championships will bring together more than 300 players from 15 countrieswho will be competing in more than 160 games in the different disciplines of this sport.

Following the Barcelona Olympic Games, when Basque pelota was an exhibition sport, the city is reopening a window onto this time-honoured sport. Tickets to the event will be on sale from April, on the official championship website.
